Intermotor

1. Intermotor formed in 1967 by Stuart Copson and George Paris. Originally sold contact sets to small retail and trade outlets.

2. Moved to Nottingham in 1970 and began to develop a manufacturing base. Bought machinery to make ignition coils and condensers and established a capability to make distributor caps and ignition coils.

3. By the late 1970s Intermotor was a significant trade supplier and they embarked on a capital investment programme to increase the manufactured content of their programme and to improve the quality of the product.

4. Intermotor's customer base began to develop as the wholesale sector recognised the strength of the range and with this the programme became attractive as a private label proposition.

5. Switches and sensors were added to the programme to augment ignition.

6. Expansion of the business led to the development of the site in Hucknall and the move of the administration and warehousing to the current location in the early 1990s.

7. Further investment made in an extrusion line to facilitate the manufacture of an ignition lead range in 1993.

8. In 1995, the original managing partners retired and sold the company to the existing Executive Directors who maintain the company philosophy of investment in the business. Sales continue to grow and a successful Export business develops.

9. Intermotor begins to sell into niche Original Equipment markets and are successful in securing a number of prestigious accounts.

10. BS5750 is gained.

11. The decline of traditional ignition and the rise of engine management stimulates Intermotor into a joint venture with Standard Motor Products of the USA in ECU remanufacturing. Blue Streak Europe is established in January 1996

12. July 4th 1996 sees SMP take a controlling interest in Intermotor and set ambitious targets for growth in the years to come, in both Europe and the UK.

13. The addition of SMP sourced engine management product strengthens the Intermotor product portfolio and business grows despite the decline in core products.

16. July 1999QS9000 achieved.

17. April 1999 Lemark acquired.

18. Carol Cable acquired in April 2002.

19. Webcon subject to a Management Buy Out in July 2003
